Drop Caps

I had the great pleasure of working with Sami Wittwer and Dane Cardiel creating lettering, logos, and wingdings for the premier issue of Good Tape.

Most of you who have worked with and know me, understand that I’ve always seen myself as something of a 12th century monk with tonsured hair and feathered quill, “chunking” initial caps into codex. I’m kidding, yet I am truly inspired by the beautiful illustrated lettering found in scripture from antiquity through the middle ages.

What may be true is that many of you have seen me drawing wacky letters in the margins of my notes during meetings, while rendering, or waiting on client notes. I never tire is seeing how far I can stretch letter forms, to distort, mangle, warp familiar shapes while maintaining some legibility (or sometimes not concerned at all, about readability). And whether or not intentional, I’m happy to be keeping this venerable art form alive, and so grateful that Good Tape asked me to do so in their inaugural issue.

“The Art of…” Logo

Process: From a humble rough sketch in a stacked arrangement, the logo began unpolished but full of intent. Through refinement, balance, and careful iteration, it evolved into a structured, outlined work of “Art,” capturing both its original spirit and a newfound clarity. What started as a loose idea became a definitive mark—bold, intentional, and unmistakable.

Wingdings and Endmarks

You don’t often here people shouting from the roof top about the glory of wingdings; probably due to the funny name and their diminutive stature, but these baddies pack a punch and add plenty of visual interest into cramped areas.

This is us shouting from a rooftop, “Yodel-Ay-Hee-Hoo!”.

Celebrity Issue Drop Caps

The second issue of Good Tape magazine, The Celebrity Issue, explores the intersection of fame, culture, and podcasting, featuring interviews, exclusive insights, and striking visuals. To complement the theme, we designed a custom star background for the drop caps, adding a unique touch to the issue’s aesthetic.
